Mahindra Thar Electric First Road Test Mule Spotted: The Thar Is Going Electric, and This Time It Looks Real

For years, the idea of an electric Mahindra Thar sounded exciting—but distant.

Mahindra showed the world the Vision Thar.e concept in 2023. It looked futuristic, aggressive and almost too radical to imagine as a production SUV. Then came the Vision T concept, which made the idea feel much more realistic.

Now comes the moment Thar fans have been waiting for.

A camouflaged Thar-family electric SUV has been spotted testing on public roads.

And this changes the story.

This is no longer just Mahindra showing an electric off-roader at an auto show. A real development vehicle is now running on the road, collecting kilometres and going through the kind of testing that every production SUV must survive before reaching customers.

The camouflage hides the final design, but it cannot hide the bigger message.

Mahindra is seriously working on an electric Thar.

And if the production version manages to retain the attitude of the current Thar while adding the instant torque of an electric powertrain, things could get very interesting.

The Spy Mule Has Finally Given the Game Away

The first thing that catches your eye is the stance.

Even under heavy camouflage, the test vehicle has the upright, boxy proportions that immediately remind you of the Thar family. The tall bonnet, squared-off body, high ground clearance and chunky SUV proportions give it a very different character from the typical aerodynamic electric SUV.

That is exactly what Mahindra needs.

An electric Thar cannot simply look like another battery-powered family SUV with a Thar badge.

It has to look like a Thar.

The test mule appears to follow the design direction previewed by the Vision T concept, rather than copying the extremely futuristic appearance of the original Vision Thar.e.

That could actually be good news.

The Vision Thar.e was a bold design exercise. Vision T looked much closer to something that could eventually sit in a showroom.

And now the road-going prototype appears to be taking that idea one step further.

This Could Be the Thar’s Biggest Transformation Yet

The current Thar built Mahindra’s reputation as one of India’s most recognisable lifestyle SUVs.

It has the design.

It has the off-road image.

It has a loyal enthusiast following.

But an electric Thar will enter a completely different world.

Instead of a traditional petrol or diesel engine, the upcoming SUV is expected to use an electric powertrain, bringing instant torque and silent operation to the Thar formula.

That combination could be fascinating.

Imagine crawling over a rocky trail with electric torque available almost instantly.

There is no waiting for an engine to build revs.

There is no conventional gear-changing drama.

The response from an electric motor can be immediate and extremely controllable at low speeds.

But there is another side to the story.

An electric off-roader also has to deal with battery weight, thermal management, water protection and underbody protection.

So Mahindra cannot simply make a powerful EV and call it a Thar.

It has to make an EV that can survive being driven like a Thar.

That is the real test.

Five Doors Could Make the Electric Thar Much More Practical

One of the biggest changes expected from this next-generation Thar-family SUV is its more practical body configuration.

The prototype appears to be based around a five-door layout, following the direction established by Vision T.

That could dramatically broaden its appeal.

The three-door Thar has a strong enthusiast following, but families often want easier rear-seat access, more cabin space and better everyday usability.

A five-door electric Thar could offer exactly that.

It could retain the rugged visual identity while becoming easier to use as a daily vehicle.

And that combination could be powerful.

Think about it.

A vehicle that looks tough enough for an off-road trail but can also carry the family comfortably on a weekend trip.

That is a much larger market than the hardcore three-door lifestyle SUV audience.

The Design Still Has That Thar Attitude

Mahindra appears to understand one thing very clearly: don’t mess with the identity.

The prototype carries the upright SUV stance associated with the Thar family.

The front end appears tall and squared-off. The body has a strong shoulder line, while the wheel arches give the SUV the muscular appearance expected from a Thar.

The final lighting elements remain hidden, but the overall design philosophy seems clear.

This will not be a soft-looking electric SUV.

That matters because the electric SUV market is becoming increasingly crowded with smooth, aerodynamic designs.

Mahindra can differentiate the Thar Electric by doing almost the opposite.

Make it boxy.

Make it aggressive.

Make it unmistakably Thar.

And Then There Is the EV Platform

Underneath the body lies perhaps the most important part of the story.

Mahindra’s next-generation SUV strategy includes its NU_IQ modular architecture, which has been designed to support multiple powertrain technologies.

That gives Mahindra considerable flexibility.

The Vision T concept was developed around this newer architecture, moving the Thar-family electric idea closer to a production-ready engineering direction.

This is significant because Mahindra does not appear to be treating the electric Thar as an isolated experiment.

Instead, it is becoming part of a much larger next-generation SUV strategy.

That could help the company share technology, components and engineering knowledge across future products.

For customers, however, the platform name matters far less than what the vehicle actually delivers.

And that brings us to the biggest question.

How Powerful Will the Thar Electric Be?

This is where the internet is already full of numbers.

Battery capacities.

Dual-motor setups.

400-km-plus range claims.

Large power figures.

Fast acceleration.

But Mahindra has not yet officially revealed the final production specifications of the road-going vehicle.

So we are not going to turn rumours into facts.

What we do know is that the original Vision Thar.e was presented as a born-electric SUV with an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain.

Mahindra’s concept also focused heavily on off-road capability.

That gives us a useful indication of the company’s thinking.

If the production SUV stays true to that philosophy, an AWD configuration would make considerable sense.

But until Mahindra officially confirms the production powertrain, the exact motor configuration, battery capacity and range remain unknown.

And honestly, the most interesting part may not be the horsepower figure anyway.

It will be how Mahindra tunes the torque.

Electric Torque Could Completely Change the Thar Experience

This could be the Thar Electric’s secret weapon.

Traditional engines build power through the rev range.

Electric motors can deliver strong torque almost instantly.

For an off-road vehicle, that characteristic can be extremely useful.

Climbing a steep surface?

Precise throttle response matters.

Crossing loose terrain?

Controlled torque matters.

Crawling over rocks?

Smooth power delivery matters.

This is where an electric Thar could feel completely different from today’s SUV.

Instead of the familiar engine sound and gear changes, the driver could experience a much quieter but potentially much more immediate response.

It could feel futuristic without losing the physical, mechanical character that makes off-roading exciting.

That is the balance Mahindra has to get right.

But There Is One Problem Mahindra Cannot Ignore

Battery weight.

Electric SUVs are heavy. Add a large battery pack, a strong body, off-road hardware and potentially an AWD system, and the weight can climb quickly.

That creates an interesting engineering challenge.

A heavy SUV can have enormous traction, but suspension tuning, braking, tyre selection and chassis strength become even more important.

Then there is battery protection.

A normal city EV does not need to regularly deal with rocks, deep ruts and harsh underbody impacts.

A Thar does.

So the battery pack will need serious protection if Mahindra wants owners to take the electric SUV where they take the conventional Thar.

This is one area where the upcoming road tests will matter enormously.

The Real Thar Test Will Not Happen on a Highway

Highway testing can tell Mahindra about efficiency, stability, NVH and thermal performance.

But the real question is what happens when the road disappears.

That is where the Thar name carries expectations.

Owners will want to know whether the electric SUV can climb, crawl, cross and descend difficult terrain without constantly worrying about the battery underneath.

Mahindra will have to prove that.

And if it does, the Thar Electric could become something genuinely different in India’s EV market.

Not just another electric SUV.

An electric adventure SUV.

When Could the Mahindra Thar Electric Launch?

Mahindra has not officially announced a final launch date for the production Thar Electric.

However, the appearance of a road-testing prototype is an important development.

It indicates that the project has moved beyond the purely conceptual stage.

Mahindra’s broader NU_IQ product roadmap points towards new SUV production from 2027 onwards, but the company has not yet officially attached a specific launch date to the Thar-family electric model.

Therefore, any exact month or price circulating online should be treated as speculation until Mahindra makes an official announcement.

What matters right now is simpler.

The vehicle exists. It is being tested. And Mahindra is putting real engineering effort behind it.

The Biggest Question: Will It Still Feel Like a Thar?

This is where the entire project will be judged.

Mahindra can build a fast EV.

It can build a long-range EV.

It can build a technologically advanced EV.

But the Thar is different.

People buy it because it has character.

Because it looks tough.

Because it feels adventurous.

Because the name itself carries an image.

So the electric version cannot lose that identity while chasing technology.

It needs to bring the future without deleting the past.

That is the difficult part.

And judging by the Vision T direction and the latest road-testing prototype, Mahindra appears to understand that.

Gaadi Xpert Verdict

The Mahindra Thar Electric has entered its most exciting phase yet.

The original Vision Thar.e proved that Mahindra was thinking seriously about an electric off-roader.

The Vision T showed how that idea could evolve into a more realistic production SUV.

Now the road-testing prototype is showing something even more important.
